GE Monogram Refrigerator Models: How to Identify Yours
Find the model and serial label on a GE Monogram built-in refrigerator, read its build date, and see which family, parts and warranty it uses.
Most built-in GE Monogram refrigerator models belong to one of three families: integrated bottom-freezers such as the ZIC363 and ZIP364, column refrigerators and freezers from 18 to 36 inches wide, and 36-, 42- and 48-inch built-in side-by-sides. To tell which one you own, find the model and serial label inside the fresh food compartment; the model number identifies the family, and the serial number’s first two letters give the month and year it was built.
Many Scarsdale houses date from the 1920s and 1930s and their kitchens have been redone more than once, so a paneled refrigerator can be older or newer than the cabinets around it. The custom panel also hides the outside badge, which leaves the label as the only reliable record.
Which GE Monogram refrigerator models are there?
| Family | Model numbers | Layout | Where the label is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Integrated bottom-freezer | ZIC363, ZIP364 | Fresh food above, freezer below | Side wall beside the right pan |
| Column refrigerator | ZIR241, ZIR301, ZIR361 | 24, 30 or 36 inches | Hinge-side wall, by the humidity control drawer |
| Column freezer | ZIF181, ZIF241, ZIF301, ZIF361 | 18, 24, 30 or 36 inches | Hinge-side wall, by the ice storage drawer |
| Built-in side-by-side | ZISB360D, ZISS360D, ZIS420N, ZISS420N, ZISB420D, ZISS420D, ZIS480N, ZISS480N, ZISB480D, ZISS480D | 36, 42 or 48 inches | Lower right of the fresh food section, beneath the climate control drawer |
Columns are often installed as a pair, a refrigerator beside a freezer. Each half of a column refrigerator pair has its own label, serial number and parts, so read both.
Where is the model and serial number label?
Open the fresh food door, slide out the nearby pans or drawers and use a flashlight. The label is a sticker on an inside wall, not on the door or the outside panel:
- Integrated models: the side wall next to the right pan.
- Columns: the hinge-side wall, next to the humidity drawer or the ice storage drawer.
- Side-by-sides: low on the right of the fresh food section, under the climate control drawer.
- Photograph the label straight on so every character is readable.
Don’t confuse it with the water filter’s part number (XWF or XWFE) or the publication number on the owner’s manual.
How do you read the build date from the serial number?
Monogram codes the manufacture date into the serial number, not the model number. The serial starts with two letters followed by six numbers: the first letter is the month and the second is the year.
| First letter | Month | First letter | Month |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | January | M | July |
| D | February | R | August |
| F | March | S | September |
| G | April | T | October |
| H | May | V | November |
| L | June | Z | December |
Year letters repeat every twelve years. A serial beginning GA was built in April 2001 or April 2013, and one beginning AD in January 2002 or January 2014. To settle which, check the print date beside the owner’s manual publication number, written like 02-20 for February 2020.
Why does a technician need the model and serial number?
- Parts. Built-in side-by-sides use a direct airflow system with the compressor and evaporator in the overhead compartment. Built-in bottom-freezers use one compressor, an evaporator on the freezer’s rear wall and a damper feeding the fresh food side. Parts for one do not fit the other.
- Warranty. Monogram’s limited warranty gives two years of free parts and in-home labor for manufacturing defects from the original purchase date. The sealed system (compressor, condenser, evaporator and connecting tubing) gets parts and in-home labor for five years, then parts only from the sixth through the twelfth year, with the owner paying the trip and labor. Keep the purchase receipt with the serial photo.
- Controls. On integrated bottom-freezers, a display reading SHO means showroom mode: lights and controls work but cooling is disabled, even after unplugging. Holding the alarm and minus keys for 5 seconds toggles it. On ZIC363/ZIP364 models, holding (+) and (-) for 3 seconds shows COOLING OFF; pressing either pad returns it to COOLING ON.
What does a GE Monogram refrigerator repair cost?
Typical ranges: a diagnostic visit runs $95–$149, common refrigerator repairs $300–$750, and sealed-system or compressor work $800–$2,200. The firm quote is given on site after diagnosis, and the service call is credited toward the repair. See repair pricing for other ranges.
Before you call (914) 275-0968, have the model number, the full serial number and a short note on the symptom. Scarsdale Estate Appliance Repair is an independent service, not manufacturer-authorized, and works on GE Monogram built-ins as well as Sub-Zero refrigeration. The refrigerator repair page explains how a visit works.
Frequently asked questions
How old is my GE Monogram refrigerator?
Read the serial number’s first two letters: the first is the month and the second is the year, which repeats every twelve years. The owner’s manual print date helps pick the right cycle.
Are older GE Monogram refrigerator models worth repairing?
Often, yes, when the cabinet, doors and sealed system are sound. A diagnosis shows whether the fault is a common repair or sealed-system work, so you can weigh it against replacing a built-in sized to your cabinetry.
Which water filter does my Monogram refrigerator use?
Column refrigerators and freezers take an XWF or XWFE filter, replaced every six months or sooner if 170 gallons have been dispensed or flow drops. Integrated ZIC363/ZIP364 models use the XWFE.
